The demand for reliable non-medical care services is rising, creating a significant opportunity for a trained workforce. Also as identified in the national health strategies, there is a growing need for home-based care & live in services even for the adult/elderly/children aged 6 weeks to 12 years and chronically ill from the individuals/families/companies/ the healthcare system needing such staff for local/ international & travel care and caregivers by enhancing the skills of their family and community caregivers. There is need then to come up with such a training: Non-medical home and travel care for local caregivers. The rationale to come up with such a training programme are as follows:
- Geographic Access: Botswana is a large and sparsely populated country, with many people living in remote and rural areas far from major hospitals in Gaborone and Francistown. Non-medical home-based care (HBC) can bring support services closer to the patient’s home in areas, reducing the burden of travel time and costs for patients and their families.
- Alleviating Burden on Health Facilities: By managing stable patients at home and in the community, these programmes reduce the workload for nurses and primary healthcare facilities, freeing up hospital resources for acute and emergency cases.
- High Incidence of Chronic Diseases: The country faces a significant burden of chronic conditions, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), diabetes, and hypertension and even the aging population.. Home-based care ensures continuity of care and improved adherence to long-term treatment regimens, which can be challenging to maintain with frequent clinic visits.
- Need for Person-Centered, Holistic Care: The programme will support a shift towards
person-centered care that respects the patient’s cultural context, language, and individual needs. Home-based care allows for more time with patients and their families, which can improve overall well-being and satisfaction.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Providing care at home is a cost-effective alternative to hospital-based care for many non-acute conditions, helping the government manage healthcare expenditures more efficiently. The non-medical home and travel care training program in Botswana will finally improve the quality of life for vulnerable individuals stated above.
Target training Participants:
- Long term unemployed (people with continuous period of unemployment extending for more than a year, e.g. graduates.)

- Reduce Incidents and Costs: Effective ongoing training is linked to lower accident rates, which reduces insurance premiums, legal liability, and costs associated with employee downtime.
- Foster a Positive Safety Culture: Providing continuous education demonstrates an employer’s commitment to wellbeing, which boosts employee morale, job satisfaction, and overall productivity.
